Food Disparities in America

Brief: Create a Z-fold brochure highlighting a social justice issue in America and an accompanying 6-panel installation

Duration: 4 weeks

For this project, I explored food deserts and food swamps, including factors like vehicle accessibility, to highlight disparities in access to healthy food across America. The Z-fold brochure uses bold, fast-food-inspired colors (yellow, orange, and red) to evoke the visual language of unhealthy food options. The cover is designed as a burger wrapper, symbolically “unwrapping” the information inside, while the back cover provides actionable ways for readers to help address the issue.

This project combined print design, experiential storytelling, and social impact, transforming data and research into tangible, interactive ways for people to learn about and respond to food inequity.

Prototyping an Exhibition

The accompanying 6-panel installation was created as an interactive community food pantry under the principle of “take what you need, leave what you can.” I incorporated practical considerations such as weather by using one panel as a protective roof. The exhibit also emphasizes key statistics, including a large-scale “23.5” that wraps across multiple panels to guide visitors through the installation and toward the entrance. Inside the panels, additional facts from the brochure reinforce the message, creating a cohesive, educational, and engaging experience.
